Working on the Stag Canon No 1 Mining Disaster from 1923 Dawson, New Mexico
My mother and I took a day trip in 2021 to see Dawson, New Mexico, a ghost town just a little south of us in Raton. Unfortunately, it is now owned by a private corporation and gated.
We were able to see the cemetery just outside of the town though.
The miner's plot has burials from both the 1913 and 1923 mining disasters that took place here.
In 1913, 263 men died in the Stag Canon No 2 disaster, and in 1923, 120 men died in the Stag Canon No 1 disaster. Not all of those who died in these disasters are buried in the miner's plot, but the majority are.
I've been working on adding profiles for these miners as my schedule allows. Today, I'm working on the Stag Canon No 1 disaster from 1923. FamilySearch has a record collection of New Mexico, Deaths, 1889-1945, and records after about 1920 have the birth date and location of the deceased, in addition to information for spouse and parents.
Currently, 31 profiles exist on WikiTree, my goal is to add nine today.
Sad disasters. Good to see the historic marker and great that you're memorializing these folks on WikiTree to share their stories more widely.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Marian!
DeleteVery interesting. I enjoyed watching you enter profiles on WikiTree, which I have never done.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading my post, Lisa! Glad you like to see the process of adding profiles to WikiTree. I'll be doing more for my One Place Study today https://ratongenealogy.blogspot.com/
